At Aimée de Mars, a natural perfume is a perfume made entirely from materials of natural origin. Since 2024, our perfumes have been 100% natural, created by founding perfumer Valérie Demars from flowers, plants, woods, resins, natural extracts and natural isolates derived from biotechnology. Their longevity is supported in particular by Aiméenolide®, our plant-based musk. But our work goes beyond composition. With Aromaparfumerie®, inner transformation through the power of plants and olfaction, we create perfumes designed to smell beautiful and accompany what we feel.

What is a truly natural perfume?

For us, the answer lies in a simple distinction: a natural perfume is not merely a perfume that contains natural materials. It is a perfume whose formula is made entirely from materials of natural origin.

This distinction matters because the percentages shown may be calculated based on the entire bottle, which consists mainly of alcohol, rather than on the fragrance concentrate alone. Let us take the example used in our formulation work: if the concentrate represents approximately 10% of the finished product and a threshold of 95% is calculated based on the entire bottle, the remaining 5% may represent up to half of the concentrate. A very high proportion of naturally derived ingredients in the finished product therefore does not necessarily indicate what the perfume itself is made of.

At Aimée de Mars, we have chosen to take this approach all the way. Our perfumes are formulated with raw materials that are 100% naturally derived. Valérie Demars’s palette now includes more than 350: essential oils, absolutes, resins, extracts and natural isolates.

It is thanks to this living material that the perfumer’s work begins.

Do 100% natural perfumes really exist?

Yes, and although they have been developing in recent years, they remain rare in contemporary perfumery.

Creating perfumes this way means working with a more limited palette and finding a different balance, dimension and longevity. There is also an economic reality. For Belle Rose, the first perfume created by Valérie, her internal costing estimates that a comparable concentrate would cost approximately ten times less if it were made synthetically.

Choosing natural materials is therefore also a perfumer’s choice. A rose, iris, vetiver or sandalwood has its own nuances, variations and olfactory texture. The material does not merely reproduce a scent. It contributes to the perfume’s personality.

This is the niche perfumery that Aimée de Mars has been developing since its creation.

How can you tell whether a perfume is truly 100% natural?

When looking at a bottle, the first thing to check is the exact wording used by the brand. “100% naturally derived” provides much more precise information than terms such as “clean,” “inspired by nature” or “with natural ingredients.”

The ingredient list provides further clues. To learn how to read it, you can decipher your perfume’s INCI list.

One point often comes as a surprise: a long list of allergens does not necessarily mean that a perfume contains more synthetic materials. Molecules such as limonene or linalool occur naturally in many essential oils and must be declared according to the applicable thresholds. A longer label may therefore be linked to the richness of the plant-based materials used.

Finally, when a certification is displayed, look at what it actually certifies and which product it applies to. “Natural,” “organic” and “COSMOS Natural” do not mean the same thing.

“A natural perfume doesn’t last”

This idea stems from a technical reality: longevity is one of the major challenges of natural perfumery.

When transitioning her perfumes to 100% natural in 2024, Valérie Demars sought another way to build the persistence of the trail. This work gave rise to Aiméenolide®, our plant-based musk and proprietary signature, composed mainly of iris, carrot and sandalwood.

Its role is to support longevity and sillage while preserving the living character of natural materials. It enabled the Maison to replace the synthetic musks previously used for this purpose and continue its work on natural formulation.

It is also important to distinguish a perfume’s longevity from its power in the air. A perfume can remain present on the skin without seeking to precede the person wearing it by several metres. Valérie often answers this question with humour: “Do we need a perfume to last three days? I think we wash, don’t we?”

For Aimée de Mars, sillage is first and foremost a presence on the skin. It evolves with it, warms up, softens and allows the materials to reveal themselves over time.

Which natural perfume should you choose to start with?

The best natural perfume will first be the one that meets your skin and your sensitivity. At Aimée de Mars, we like to choose a perfume based on what we want to feel or accompany, rather than looking only at its olfactory family.
